Suspect Arrested in Connection with Mass Shooting That Killed Nine

A 20-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the mass shooting that left nine people dead in Marikana last month.

Members of Operation Lockdown III apprehended the suspect during a raid at his residence in Lower Cross Road, Philippi, in the early hours of Friday morning. The operation took place at approximately 00:40 on 20 February 2026.

According to authorities, upon searching the premises, officials confiscated five cellular telephones belonging to the suspect. The devices have been booked into evidence for further investigation.

The suspect is currently in custody at Lentegeur police station. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance at the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s court on Monday, 23 February 2026.

The arrest stems from the 17 January 2026 incident in Marikana in which nine individuals lost their lives.
