NORTHERN CAPE — The long-awaited conclusion of the Setlagole rape case has resulted in a life sentence for Monnapula Abel Lobese, who was formally penalized by the Atamelang Regional Court for the sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl.
The judicial outcome was officially delivered on Monday, 29 June 2026. The 21-year-old convict stood before the regional court to face the consequences of his actions, ultimately receiving life imprisonment following his formal conviction for the severe crime.
The charges originated from a violent encounter on the evening of Friday, 19 July 2019. Court records indicate that the events unfolded at approximately 19:35 after the teenage victim and a female companion were walking back from a neighborhood filling station in Setlagole.
During their walk, the two youths were ambushed by Lobese, who brandished a knife and issued severe threats. Fearing for their safety, the victims made an immediate attempt to flee the armed assailant.
Despite their efforts to escape, Lobese successfully overpowered the situation and forcibly seized the 15-year-old girl. He dragged her away and marched her to a nearby deserted structure. Inside the abandoned house, Lobese proceeded to rape the teenager, an act that set the stage for the eventual judicial proceedings that culminated in his 2026 sentencing.
